Adnane Benali

Hand-written, authentic and original.

I use traditional tools on archival paper.

I use the tools of the traditional craft of Arabic calligraphy because they produce the best results and is my way of preserving the heritage of the craft. Bamboo, in several varieties, is my first choice which I cut into pens of different sizes to write with. I use the finest ink I can find. I dye archival paper to an off-white or cream color and sometimes I use my own concoctions from nature to produce interesting hues; a good paper ties everything together.

Computer fonts.

There are a number of computer Arabic fonts out there and most of them are acceptable for linear writing, used in press and without them we wouldn't be able to transfer information today so rapidly. Computer fonts do not yet produce the human factor though; the hand-rendered text written on splendid paper that can be cherished for generations. Hand-written calligraphy pieces are collectible. You are probably looking for that human touch. As a calligrapher who develops a breathing relationship with the letters, lines, curves and paper I do a far more superior work than computers.

I don't write illicit language.
